Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist (COMS) | Shelby, North Carolina

Empower students to gain independence and confidence by guiding them in the development of essential orientation and mobility skills. As a contract Orientation and Mobility Specialist, you’ll partner with an educational team to help children and young adults who are blind or visually impaired navigate their school environment and daily routines safely and effectively.

Key Qualifications:

• Certification as an Orientation and Mobility Specialist (OMS) or eligibility for certification
• Experience working in schools or with school-aged children preferred
• Strong communication skills for collaborating with students, parents, and school staff
• Ability to conduct assessments and create customized instructional plans
• Familiarity with mobility aids, adaptive technology, and relevant state and federal regulations

Responsibilities:

• Conduct comprehensive orientation and mobility assessments for students with visual impairments
• Develop and implement individualized instructional programs to support each student’s unique needs
• Teach skills such as safe street crossing, public transportation use, and indoor and outdoor navigation
• Provide direct instruction in the use of mobility devices and sensory aids
• Participate in IEP meetings and contribute documentation related to student progress
• Consult with teachers and staff to create accessible environments and integrate orientation and mobility strategies into daily school life
• Maintain detailed records and reporting as required
