Qualifications & Preferred Experience:
- Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist (COMS) or eligibility for certification
- Experience working in educational or school-based settings
- Strong understanding of the needs of students with visual impairments
- Excellent communication, organization, and record-keeping abilities
- Collaborative mindset for working with teachers, staff, families, and paraprofessionals
Key Responsibilities:
- Assess students to identify their orientation and mobility needs and create customized instructional plans
- Provide direct, hands-on instruction in safe travel techniques both indoors and outdoors
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to incorporate mobility goals into students’ IEPs
- Train students in the use of assistive devices and travel aids such as canes or electronic travel tools
- Offer guidance and support to school staff and families to reinforce student progress and promote independence
- Maintain clear documentation on student assessments, progress reports, and instructional outcomes
