Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist (COMS) | Vero Beach, Florida

Make a meaningful impact by supporting one student as an Orientation and Mobility Specialist in a school-based, contract role. You’ll provide specialized Orientation and Mobility (O&M) services for one student who already receives daily assistance from a Teacher of the Visually Impaired (TVI). Your expertise will supplement these supports and focus on fostering the student’s confidence, safety, and practical navigation skills throughout the school year.

Qualifications:

• Certification as an Orientation and Mobility Specialist (OMS)
• Experience working with visually impaired students in educational settings preferred
• Understanding of assessment and instructional strategies for O&M training
• Strong communication and collaboration skills to coordinate with a multidisciplinary team
• Ability to tailor interventions to individual student needs

Responsibilities:

• Deliver direct O&M instruction for approximately 30 minutes per week
• Assess the student's unique orientation and mobility needs within the school environment
• Collaborate with the on-site TVI and other school staff to ensure continuity of services
• Develop specific O&M objectives and document student progress
• Offer practical solutions and modifications to promote greater independence and inclusion for the student
• Share insights and recommendations with the educational team and family, as needed
