Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Orientation and Mobility.
  • Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist (COMS) through ACVREP.
  • Experience conducting assessments, implementing individualized plans, and providing direct instruction for students with visual impairments.
  • Strong skills in collaboration, communication, and adaptive strategies for travel and safety.
  • Valid state driver’s license and ability to respond to travel needs at short notice.

Key Responsibilities

  • Evaluate orientation and mobility needs of students using a variety of tools and techniques.
  • Develop and monitor Individualized Education/Family Service Plan (IEP/IFSP) goals specifically tailored to orientation and mobility.
  • Deliver hands-on O&M instruction, supporting students in concept development, safe travel, sensory integration, and the use of low vision devices.
  • Consult and collaborate with educators, families, and community partners to create accessible environments and empower students’ independence.
  • Order, distribute, and maintain mobility aids such as canes and vision devices.
  • Lead staff and family in-service programs to enhance understanding and support for O&M instruction.
  • Maintain accurate documentation, daily lesson plans, and progress records as required.
  • Advise on environmental modifications for maximum student safety and learning.
