Step into an impactful contract position delivering vital Orientation and Mobility services to students with visual impairments for the remainder of the 25/26 school year. This role provides an opportunity to work closely with students, staff, and families, fostering independence and safe travel skills in educational and community settings.
Qualifications and Desired Experience:
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Orientation and Mobility
- Current Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist (COMS) credential from ACVREP
- Demonstrated experience in evaluating the orientation and mobility needs of visually impaired students
- Strong understanding of concept development, use of adaptive devices, and strategies for safe, effective travel
- Excellent communication and collaboration abilities
- Ability to maintain a valid driver’s license and provide transport as needed
Key Responsibilities:
- Participate in the referral and assessment process for visually impaired students
- Conduct evaluations covering environmental orientation, use of low-vision devices, personal safety, and advocacy
- Develop and implement IEP/IFSP goals and objectives in consultation with IEP teams
- Recommend and adapt instructional programs to meet individual student needs based on evaluation results
- Deliver direct instructional services and provide ongoing consultation to school staff, families, and community partners
- Procure, maintain, and distribute canes and other orientation and mobility tools
- Monitor and document progress using ongoing, criterion-based assessments
- Conduct in-service training sessions for staff and families on orientation and mobility concepts and practices
- Contribute expertise to the design of safe and efficient school environments
