A unique opportunity is available for a Sign Language Interpreter with expertise in educational settings. This contract position, situated near Akron, OH, is tailored for professionals eager to support a young learner during the 26/27 school year. You’ll work with a 4-year-old PreK student who is medically fragile and utilizes a ventilator and tracheostomy, making a compassionate presence essential. The assignment runs four days a week, four hours per day, offering a focused and consistent schedule. Anticipated start is the second week of August.
Qualifications & Desired Experience:
- Fluency in American Sign Language (ASL) and experience as a Sign Language Interpreter in schools
- Understanding of, or willingness to learn about, supporting medically fragile children (especially those with vents and trachs)
- Ability to collaborate closely with educators, healthcare providers, and family members
- Patience, adaptability, and sensitivity to the unique needs of young learners
- Relevant certification or licensure as required in Ohio
Role Responsibilities:
- Provide direct interpreting services for a PreK student with complex medical needs
- Facilitate clear, age-appropriate communication between the student, peers, and school staff
- Ensure all interactions support the student’s learning, safety, and social engagement
- Adapt interpreting methods to suit learning environments, including group and one-on-one settings
- Maintain confidentiality and professionalism at all times
