Qualifications & Skills:
- Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL)
- Previous interpreting experience in schools or comparable environments highly preferred
- Valid certification or state licensure for educational interpreting (as required by Illinois)
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills
- Ability to adapt language level to student needs
- Professionalism, dependability, and sensitivity to confidential information
Core Responsibilities:
- Interpret spoken language into ASL (and vice versa) for students who are deaf or hard of hearing
- Facilitate classroom communication between students, teachers, and peers
- Support students throughout their school day, including academic, extracurricular, and other activities
- Collaborate with educators and support staff to promote an inclusive learning environment
- Uphold ethical standards for educational interpreting
- Maintain accurate records as required
