Looking for an opportunity to use your sign language expertise in a school setting? Two contract positions are available for skilled Sign Language Interpreters to work one-on-one with elementary-aged students in the Virginia Beach area. This assignment begins August 25, 2026, and continues through June 15, 2027, offering a full-time schedule of 35 hours per week, Monday through Friday.

Your assignments may shift between school locations, ensuring you have dynamic and meaningful experiences while supporting students who may not always be present at their home campus. While Visaphonics proficiency is appreciated, it is not required—commitment to student-centered, high-quality interpretation takes top priority.

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Valid VA Quality Assurance Screening (VQAS) Level III certification is required
  • Strong preference for Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA) score of 3.5+; applicants with scores above 3.0 or a QAS score of 3 or better will also be interviewed
  • Experience interpreting in educational settings, especially with elementary students, is highly valued
  • Flexibility to work across different campuses based on student assignments
  • Professionalism and confidentiality in handling sensitive information
  • Positive attitude and genuine passion for supporting accessible learning

Responsibilities:

  • Provide effective 1:1 sign language interpretation for assigned elementary students throughout the school day
  • Adapt interpreting methods to each student’s unique communication preferences
  • Collaborate with teachers and school staff to foster an inclusive classroom environment
  • Travel between schools within the region as needed to provide coverage
  • Maintain accurate and confidential records according to school policy
