A full-time opportunity is available for a Sign Language Interpreter to support an elementary student with deafness and additional visual impairment in a school setting near Chicago, IL. This 1:1 interpreting role is ideal for a professional experienced in American Sign Language (ASL) and working collaboratively within educational teams.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide individualized sign language interpreting services to a student with dual sensory needs (deafness and visual impairment).
  • Collaborate closely with the educational team to develop and implement strategies that enhance the student’s visual access.
  • Model ASL language consistently, supporting a student who is relatively new to American Sign Language.
  • Facilitate effective communication between the student, educators, and peers to ensure full participation in the classroom environment.
  • Maintain a supportive and adaptive learning environment responsive to the student’s unique needs.

Desired Qualifications and Experience:

  • Proficiency in American Sign Language and experience interpreting in educational settings.
  • Understanding of visual impairments and strategies to promote visual access for students.
  • Ability to work 1:1 with students requiring specialized support.
  • Strong teamwork and communication skills for collaborative engagement with educators and support staff.
  • Prior experience with students new to ASL is highly preferred.

Location:

  • Elementary school outside Chicago, IL, in a suburban environment near Northbrook.

This contract role spans the school year and offers a unique opportunity to make a significant impact on a student’s educational experience by fostering inclusive communication and learning.
