Step into a meaningful contract opportunity supporting students from early childhood through third grade as a Sign Language Interpreter. Based near Chicago, IL, this year-long assignment runs from July 29 to May 25, with regular hours from 8:05 AM to 3:35 PM. You'll play a vital role in both mainstream classrooms and dedicated DHH (Deaf and Hard of Hearing) settings, collaborating closely with educators and service providers to foster inclusivity and access for a diverse group of students.
Desired Experience & Qualifications:
- Current proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL)
- Previous experience as a Sign Language Interpreter in educational settings, ideally with EC-3rd grade students
- Ability to interpret across multiple environments: mainstream classes, small group DHH instruction, and therapy sessions with service providers
- Strong communication and collaboration skills to work effectively with staff and students
- Adaptability to varying student needs and settings throughout the school day
- Professional certification and credentials required by Illinois guidelines for educational interpreters
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide clear, accurate sign language interpretation for students during instructional and non-instructional activities
- Support communication in a range of contexts, including classroom instruction, group activities, and individual meetings or therapies
- Facilitate engagement between DHH students, peers, and staff to encourage participation and understanding
- Assist teachers and school teams in creating accessible educational experiences for students who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing
- Maintain confidentiality and professionalism at all times
