Make an immediate impact supporting students as a contracted Sign Language Interpreter for a school-based assignment running from August 19, 2026, through early June 2027 (with the specific end date determined by the assigned school’s schedule). This role provides essential communication access for Deaf and hard-of-hearing students, allowing them to fully participate in their educational experience within an inclusive school environment.
You’ll collaborate with teachers, staff, and families to facilitate understanding and ensure equal access to curriculum and activities. Flexibility and adaptability are important, as needs may change within the educational setting. There are one to two positions available.
Key Qualifications:
- Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL) with the ability to interpret simultaneously and consecutively in an academic setting
- Previous experience as a Sign Language Interpreter within a school or educational environment preferred
- Strong understanding of Deaf culture and sensitivity towards students’ individualized needs
- Professional certification (state or national) as required by Illinois guidelines
- Reliable, punctual, and adaptable to changing school assignments and schedules
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
Primary Responsibilities:
- Interpret classroom instruction, discussions, and school activities for students who are Deaf or hard of hearing
- Collaborate with classroom teachers and other school staff to support student engagement and participation
- Maintain confidentiality of student information in accordance with district and legal requirements
- Adjust interpreting style to match the language level and needs of each student
- Provide feedback and suggestions to support student progress as part of an educational team
