Job Title: Educational Sign Language Interpreter

Position Summary:
The Educational Sign Language Interpreter provides communication access for deaf or hard-of-hearing students by interpreting spoken language into sign language and vice versa in classroom and school settings.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Interpret classroom instruction, discussions, and school activities using appropriate sign systems (e.g., ASL).
  • Support communication between students, teachers, peers, and staff.
  • Prepare for lessons by reviewing instructional materials and vocabulary.
  • Collaborate with teachers and support staff to ensure access to curriculum.
  • Maintain confidentiality and professional interpreting standards.
  • Assist in IEP-related communication as appropriate.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Educational Interpreting or a related field required.
  • Valid EIPA (Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment) certification meeting Illinois state requirements with a score of 3.5+.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills.
Compensation for this position ranges from $28.39 to $48.39. Eligible candidates may also receive healthcare benefits, housing, and meals/incidentals.
