Sign Language Interpreter in Gary, IN

Make a meaningful difference supporting Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHH) students in an inclusive educational environment as a Sign Language Interpreter. This contract opportunity offers a chance to work onsite in a Head Start Center setting, fulfilling an essential role as a 1:1 interpreter for a DHH student. You’ll help bridge communication, facilitate learning, and contribute to a collaborative team atmosphere.

Key Qualifications:

• Valid Educational Interpreter Permit required
• Proof of high school diploma or equivalent
• Completion of Human Trafficking Training and Child Abuse and Neglect Training
• One of the following credentials:
  • Successful completion of the EIPA written test AND a score of 3.5 or higher on the EIPA skill test
  • OR proof of RID (Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf) certification
• Proficiency in American Sign Language and interpreting within school settings
• Exceptional interpersonal, listening, and communication skills
• Commitment to confidentiality and ethical interpretation practices

Position Details:

• Serve onsite at the Head Start Center, providing 1:1 interpretation for a DHH student
• Work hours: Monday through Friday, 8:00 am – 2:00 pm (30 hours per week)
• Support the student’s academic, social, and daily classroom engagement
• Collaborate closely with educators and school staff to adapt communication for student success
