Bring your expertise in American Sign Language and dedication to educational access to this rewarding role supporting high school students in a dynamic learning environment. Contract opportunities are available for skilled Sign Language Interpreters to provide essential communication support for students in an inclusive academic setting. These positions are located near Hagerstown, MD with services needed from ASAP through 6/11/27, with the potential for extended school year work.
Currently, there are two primary assignments:
- One opportunity involves daily interpreting from 11:30 am to 3:30 pm for a South High senior who is fluent in SLI, active in sports, and would benefit from a male interpreter.
- The second assignment is assisting a North High 10th-grade student (female, with cochlear implants) from 8:00 am to 3:30 pm, where gender match is preferred.
Key Qualifications:
- Current proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL) and experience as a Sign Language Interpreter in academic settings.
- Certification or licensure as required by the state of Maryland.
- Knowledge of Deaf culture, educational terminology, and student support best practices.
- Experience collaborating with educators, students, and families in school environments.
- Ability to adapt communication styles to student needs, including familiarity with cochlear implants.
Responsibilities:
- Provide real-time interpretation for academic instruction, classroom discussions, and school activities.
- Facilitate communication between students, teachers, and peers.
- Support student participation in extracurricular and athletic activities as needed.
- Maintain confidentiality and accurate records in accordance with school policies.
- Collaborate with the educational team to ensure accessible learning experiences.
