In this contract role, you will play a pivotal part supporting a Deaf or Hard of Hearing (DHH) student at a Head Start center, situated near Hammond, IN, ensuring access to comprehensive communication and learning.
As a dedicated interpreter, you will focus on one DHH student, working closely with educational staff to facilitate daily interactions. Your presence and skills will help foster inclusivity, communication, and confidence within the classroom and throughout the school day.
Key Qualifications & Experience:
- Certification or credentials in Sign Language Interpretation (national or state recognized).
- Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL) and familiarity with educational settings.
- Prior experience working one-on-one with DHH students, preferably in early childhood or school environments.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Collaborative approach when working alongside teachers and support staff.
- Reliability in maintaining confidentiality and adhering to professional standards.
Core Responsibilities:
- Interpret spoken language into sign language (and vice versa) for a single DHH student, ensuring accurate and clear communication.
- Support instructional activities by interpreting classroom discussions, lessons, and peer interactions.
- Collaborate with classroom teachers and staff to facilitate understanding and participation.
- Assist with transitions, routines, and school activities from 8:00 AM to 2:00 PM, averaging 30 hours per week.
- Provide ongoing feedback on communication access and student progress.
