Sign Language Interpreter (ASL) | Hammond, Indiana

Make a meaningful difference in a student’s school experience as an onsite Sign Language Interpreter, providing dedicated support for a DHH (Deaf or Hard of Hearing) student in an educational setting. This contract position offers the opportunity to work closely with one student at the Head Start Center, helping foster communication and inclusion each day.

Key Qualifications:

• Possession of a current Educational Interpreter Permit (required)
• Proof of high school diploma or equivalent
• Completion of Human Trafficking Training
• Completion of Child Abuse and Neglect Training
• One of the following:     - Successful completion of the EIPA written test and a minimum score of 3.5 on the EIPA skill test
      - OR, proof of valid RID certification
• Previous experience as a Sign Language Interpreter in a school environment is an asset
• Strong commitment to confidentiality, integrity, and supporting student success

Primary Responsibilities:

• Provide accurate, real-time sign language interpretation for a DHH student in daily classroom and school interactions
• Collaborate with teaching staff to adapt communication strategies as needed
• Support the student’s understanding of educational content, fostering inclusion in all classroom activities
• Maintain professionalism and ethical standards in all interpreting assignments
• Communicate effectively with teachers and support staff regarding the student’s progress and needs

This contract role is 30 hours per week, Monday through Friday, from 8:00 am to 2:00 pm, onsite at the Head Start Center in Crown Point, IN.
