What you’ll bring:

  • Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL), with demonstrated experience in educational settings
  • National Interpreter Certification (NIC) score of 3.5 or higher, or a score of 3.0 with ISBE (Illinois State Board of Education) approval
  • ISBE certification (or eligibility with appropriate approval)
  • Ability to interpret classroom instruction, discussions, and activities for deaf and hard-of-hearing students
  • Strong interpersonal skills, adaptability, and a professional approach
  • Commitment to confidentiality and ethical standards in interpreting

Key responsibilities:

  • Interpret spoken language into ASL and vice versa during classes, assemblies, meetings, and school events
  • Partner with teachers, staff, and students to support academic and social participation
  • Prepare for assignments by reviewing instructional materials in advance
  • Foster a supportive and respectful atmosphere for all students
  • Maintain accurate records in accordance with school policies and regulations
  • Participate in professional development and team meetings as required
