Make a meaningful difference by supporting a high school student’s learning journey as a Sign Language Interpreter for the upcoming academic year. This contract position offers you the chance to work closely with a 9th-grade student in a behavioral classroom setting. The environment is collaborative and focused on facilitating the student’s access to instruction, ensuring their successful reintegration after attending a Residential Day School Program. This role is dedicated to interpreting during instructional hours only, providing a schedule that offers both consistency and flexibility.
Ideal candidates will possess:
- At least one of the four national Sign Language Interpreter certifications (required)
- Demonstrated experience supporting students in classroom environments
- Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL) and familiarity with assistive listening devices
- Ability to collaborate with educational staff and adapt to student needs
- Professionalism and sensitivity in supporting students adjusting to new educational settings
Responsibilities include:
- Providing ASL interpretation during instructional periods (average 6.5 hours per day)
- Facilitating effective communication between student and instructional staff
- Supporting a student who utilizes cochlear implants, hearing aids, and an ALD device
- Adhering to the student’s schedule, with no interpreting required during lunch, arrival, or dismissal
- Collaborating with classroom teachers and school staff to optimize student engagement
- Maintaining confidentiality and following ethical guidelines for educational interpreters
