Make a meaningful difference in the life of a young student by supporting language access and inclusion as a Sign Language Interpreter/ASL Teacher on a full-time contract. This highly rewarding assignment is based in a school near Kingsley, MI, working closely with a first-grade boy who has experienced significant language deprivation. You’ll provide essential communication support and empower a student at a critical point in their learning and development.
This contract spans both the current and next school years and offers a full 37.5-hour schedule each week.
Qualifications:
- Strong skills in American Sign Language (ASL) and proficiency in educational sign language interpreting
- EIPA score of 4.0 preferred; candidates with a lower score will also be considered, with potential for temporary certification support
- Experience interpreting or teaching in a school environment, especially with elementary-aged children, is highly valued
- Patience, empathy, and adaptability in meeting the unique needs of students facing language barriers
Responsibilities:
- Facilitate clear and accurate communication between student, peers, and school staff throughout the academic day
- Support comprehension and participation in classroom instruction, group activities, and school routines
- Act as an advocate for the student’s access to language, supporting both social and academic development
- Collaborate with educators and specialists to ensure appropriate modifications and support strategies are in place
- Maintain confidentiality and follow all professional and educational standards
