Qualifications:
- Certification as a Sign Language Interpreter (state and/or national credentials preferred)
- Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL) with strong expressive and receptive skills
- Previous experience interpreting in school environments or with children/adolescents
- Understanding of educational terminology and classroom protocols
- Ability to collaborate effectively with teachers, administrators, and special education teams
- Commitment to maintaining confidentiality and adhering to ethical standards
Responsibilities:
- Interpret classroom instruction, discussions, and educational activities in ASL for students
- Facilitate communication between students, staff, and peers to foster an inclusive atmosphere
- Adapt interpreting strategies for various learning levels and subjects
- Provide interpretation during school events, meetings, and extracurricular activities as required
- Support student independence and advocacy in communication situations
- Maintain accurate records regarding services provided
- Uphold policies regarding student privacy and FERPA compliance
