Step into a meaningful contract opportunity supporting high school students as a Sign Language Interpreter. Your expertise in American Sign Language and commitment to fostering communication will be instrumental in ensuring student success in an inclusive educational setting. This position is conveniently located near Middletown, MD, serving students in the greater Hagerstown area.
Assignment details:
- Start as soon as possible through June 11, 2027, with the possibility to continue for Extended School Year (ESY) services.
- Two positions are available:
- A daily assignment from 11:30am to 3:30pm, supporting a senior at South High, with a preference for a male interpreter.
- A full-day support role from 8:00am to 3:30pm with a North High 10th grader, who is female and utilizes cochlear implants.
- Both students are accomplished, with one coming from the Maryland School for the Deaf and actively participating in football and track. While sports coverage is largely arranged, candidates comfortable interpreting during activities are encouraged to note this as an added benefit.
Qualifications:
- Proficiency and certification (state or national) in Sign Language Interpretation.
- Experience or training as a Sign Language Interpreter, with strong knowledge of ASL.
- Previous work in school settings, particularly with high school students, is highly desirable.
- Ability to provide clear, accurate interpretation, adapting to individual student needs.
- Understanding of cochlear implants and their integration with ASL is valuable.
- Respectful and professional demeanor, able to build rapport with students and staff.
Responsibilities:
- Deliver daily in-class and/or one-on-one interpreting services for assigned students.
- Facilitate effective communication between students, teachers, and peers.
- Adjust interpreting approach to suit academic, social, and extracurricular contexts.
- Maintain confidentiality and comply with school policies.
