A full-time Sign Language Interpreter position is available to support a student with deafness and additional visual impairment in an elementary school setting. This 1:1 interpreting role requires collaboration with the educational team to develop and implement strategies that enhance the student’s visual access and support her language development. The student is relatively new to American Sign Language (ASL), so providing language modeling is a key aspect of this position.
Responsibilities:
- Deliver 1:1 sign language interpreting services tailored to the individual needs of a student with deafness and visual impairment.
- Collaborate closely with the educational team to create and apply strategies that promote the student’s visual access and learning.
- Provide consistent language modeling to support the student’s acquisition and use of ASL.
- Adapt interpreting approaches to accommodate the student’s evolving communication skills and visual needs.
- Maintain confidentiality and professionalism in all interactions.
Qualifications:
- Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL).
- Experience working with deaf or hard-of-hearing children, especially in educational settings.
- Knowledge of strategies to support students with additional visual impairments.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with educators, therapists, and families.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
