A full-time Sign Language Interpreter position is available in a school setting located in Niles, MI. This contract role offers 35 hours per week, with a start date as soon as possible and an end date of June 5th, 2026. The age group served varies, with an emphasis on secondary education students. The caseload primarily involves students with severe disabilities, allowing the opportunity to work with a specialized population.
Responsibilities:
- Provide accurate and effective American Sign Language (ASL) interpretation services for students, staff, and educational activities.
- Facilitate communication between students with hearing impairments and their peers, teachers, and other school personnel.
- Support classroom instruction, meetings, and extracurricular activities by interpreting all spoken communication.
- Adapt interpreting techniques to meet individual student needs, particularly for those with severe disabilities.
- Maintain confidentiality and adhere to ethical standards of sign language interpretation.
- Collaborate with educators, therapists, and family members to enhance student inclusion and learning outcomes.
Qualifications:
- Proficient in American Sign Language with demonstrated interpreting experience in educational environments.
- Experience working with students with diverse disabilities, especially severe disabilities, is highly preferred.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work full-time with a flexible schedule during school hours.
- Previous experience in secondary education settings is desirable.
