Sign Language Interpreter in Norfolk, VA

Step into an essential educational role supporting students and fostering inclusion as a full-time American Sign Language Interpreter in a vibrant school setting near Norfolk, VA. This contract position offers the opportunity to make a meaningful difference, providing interpretive services and facilitating communication between students, educators, and staff from ASAP through June 11, 2027.

Your expertise in American Sign Language will enable students to fully access their instruction and succeed in an equitable learning environment. As a valued interpreter, you’ll work collaboratively within the educational team, adapting to classroom needs and supporting individual student goals.

What We’re Looking For:

• Valid VQAS Level 2 or higher, or EIPA score of 3.5 or higher
• Proficiency in American Sign Language and up-to-date interpreting best practices
• Experience interpreting within an academic environment strongly preferred
• Professionalism, flexibility, and cultural sensitivity
• Ability to adapt to various learning settings and communication modes
• Strong interpersonal and organizational skills

Your Responsibilities Will Include:

• Interpreting classroom lessons, conversations, and school events for students who are deaf or hard of hearing
• Assisting teachers and educational staff to create accessible, inclusive experiences
• Facilitating open communication between students, staff, and families
• Maintaining strict confidentiality and student privacy guidelines
• Participating in team meetings and ongoing training as needed
