Qualifications and Skills:
- Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL)
- Experience as a Sign Language Interpreter, preferably in educational settings
- Strong understanding of Deaf culture and the needs of Deaf and hard of hearing students
- Ability to interpret in both one-on-one and group settings (classroom, meetings, assemblies)
- Valid interpreter certification (such as EIPA, RID, or state credential) is highly preferred
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
- Strong ethical standards and commitment to confidentiality
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide accurate and effective sign language interpretation between students, staff, and other school community members
- Facilitate classroom instruction, group activities, and school events by interpreting spoken language to ASL and vice versa
- Support students in both mainstream and specialized classrooms, promoting equal access to curriculum and participation
- Collaborate with teachers and service providers to ensure appropriate accommodations
- Contribute to Individualized Education Plan (IEP) meetings when requested
- Maintain confidentiality and follow school and professional guidelines for interpreters
