Sign Language Interpreter (ASL) | Orland Park, Illinois

Step into a dynamic contract opportunity supporting Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHH) students in a junior high setting. This assignment centers on providing sign language interpreting services within a satellite program. You'll be instrumental in fostering classroom access, ensuring students can fully participate in both DHH-specific and general education settings.

As a sign language interpreter, you’ll collaborate closely with students in grades 5–8, accompanying them throughout the school day. Whether they’re in mainstream classrooms or receiving related services such as occupational therapy or social work, your skills will facilitate understanding and connection. The role runs from 8:15 am to 3:00 pm during regular school days.

Desired Qualifications:

• Certification or state-level licensure as a Sign Language Interpreter
• Demonstrated experience interpreting in educational environments, especially for DHH youth
• Strong command of American Sign Language (ASL) and familiarity with relevant classroom terminology
• Reliability, professionalism, and adaptability to a variety of learning contexts
• Ability to work collaboratively with teachers, support staff, and outside service providers

Key Responsibilities:

• Interpret for DHH students in a dedicated classroom and during mainstream academic periods
• Support communication during related service sessions such as OT and social work
• Maintain confidentiality and foster a supportive, inclusive environment
• Confer with educators regarding classroom needs and student progress
• Adapt interpreting style to meet individual student needs and classroom activities
