Sign Language Interpreter (ASL) | Orland Park, Illinois

Make a meaningful impact as a Sign Language Interpreter supporting students in grades 5-8 within a dynamic school setting. This contract opportunity focuses on assisting a satellite program while one of the regular interpreters is on leave. Your specialized skills will allow students who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing (DHH) to fully access both classroom instruction and related services, ensuring they have every chance to succeed and participate.

As an interpreter, you’ll work school hours from 8:15 am to 3:00 pm, accompanying students throughout their day—from their dedicated DHH classroom to general education settings and related therapy sessions such as occupational therapy and social work. You’ll play a key role in bridging communication between students, their peers, and educators, fostering an inclusive and engaging learning environment.

Key Qualifications:

• Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL) and experience interpreting in educational settings.
• Prior experience working with Deaf or Hard of Hearing students, ideally within grades 5-8.
• Familiarity with mainstream classroom environments and transitioning between settings.
• Professional certification for sign language interpreting (state or national) strongly preferred.
• Reliability, flexibility, and a collaborative mindset.

Role Responsibilities:

• Accurately interpret classroom lessons, discussions, and related services for DHH students.
• Support students as they transition between the DHH classroom and general education settings.
• Facilitate effective communication between students, teachers, and staff.
• Maintain professionalism and confidentiality at all times.
• Collaborate with other team members to support student progress.
