Make a meaningful impact as an on-site Sign Language Interpreter, supporting Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHH) students in an educational setting near Portage, IN. This contract position is designed for a dedicated interpreter who thrives when collaborating closely with students and educators alike. You will work directly with one DHH student at a Head Start center, facilitating clear communication and helping ensure equal access to educational content throughout the school day.

Key Qualifications:

  • Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL)
  • Current certification or state licensure as a Sign Language Interpreter
  • Previous experience in K-12 or early childhood educational environments preferred
  • Understanding of needs and sensitivities required for DHH learners
  • Professionalism, reliability, and ability to maintain confidentiality in all student matters
  • Strong interpersonal and collaborative skills to work alongside teachers and staff

Daily Responsibilities:

  • Provide one-on-one sign language interpretation for a DHH student during classroom instruction, activities, and transitions
  • Work from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., totaling 30 hours per week, at the designated Head Start center
  • Facilitate communication between the student, teachers, and peers, ensuring access to educational content and social interactions
  • Support the student in understanding instructions, participating in classroom discussions, and engaging in school routines
  • Adapt interpreting strategies to meet the student’s individual needs and the classroom environment
