A contract opportunity is available for a fluent ASL professional to serve as a dedicated 1:1 ASL Instructional Assistant for an elementary-aged student who is deaf/hard of hearing and has mild cognitive delays. In this rewarding position, you’ll provide both communication access and meaningful educational, social-emotional, and behavioral support, helping the student thrive in the classroom and beyond.
Key Qualifications:
- Fluent ASL skills—essential for this role
- Hands-on experience in schools or with special education students preferred
- Experience supporting students who are deaf/hard of hearing is advantageous
- EIPA or RID certification not required, but preferred
- Patient, positive, and encouraging presence
- Ability to collaborate with educators, clinicians, and the IEP team
- Committed to fostering communication, academic growth, and social-emotional well-being
Core Responsibilities:
- Provide consistent 1:1 support for an elementary student throughout the school day
- Facilitate access to instruction and routines with fluent ASL
- Deliver educational support beyond interpreting, including rephrasing, scaffolding, and promoting understanding
- Assist with transitions, engagement, sensory supports, and communication devices (AAC/communication boards)
- Encourage classroom participation and peer interaction
- Collaborate closely with teachers, DHH staff, and related service providers
- Offer a warm, inclusive, and supportive presence
