Key Qualifications:

  • Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL) with strong interpretation skills
  • Previous experience as a Sign Language Interpreter in an educational or school-based setting is strongly preferred
  • Solid understanding of classroom dynamics and the ability to adapt interpreting methods for different age groups and learning needs
  • Professional certification such as EIPA, RID, or equivalent is highly desirable
  • Excellent listening, concentration, and interpersonal communication abilities
  • Capacity to work both independently and collaboratively with educators, staff, and families
  • Commitment to confidentiality and supporting student privacy

Core Responsibilities:

  • Interpret spoken communication and classroom instruction between teachers, staff, and students using sign language
  • Facilitate communication during classroom discussions, assemblies, activities, and meetings
  • Work closely with teachers and other school staff to ensure full access to the curriculum for students who are deaf or hard of hearing
  • Adjust interpreting techniques to match the needs and preferences of individual students
  • Provide feedback and clarification as needed, fostering an inclusive and supportive learning environment
  • Maintain accurate and objective records as required by the role and school guidelines
