This contract role starts in August 2026 and runs through May 2027, offering a consistent 35-hour workweek within a single school. You’ll play a crucial part in creating a supportive atmosphere that promotes communication, participation, and confidence for your student.
Desired Background & Skills:
- Fluency in American Sign Language (ASL) and thorough understanding of Deaf culture
- Experience providing educational interpreting in school settings
- Familiarity with early childhood development, preferably in elementary or kindergarten environments
- National Interpreter Certification (NIC), EIPA certification, or equivalent recognized credentials preferred
- Ability to adapt interpreting style to meet the unique needs of young students
- Strong commitment to confidentiality, professionalism, and collaboration with educational staff
Key Responsibilities:
- Deliver one-on-one interpreting services for a profoundly deaf kindergarten student throughout daily classroom activities and interactions
- Collaborate with teachers, support staff, and families to ensure a fully accessible learning environment
- Accurately interpret spoken English into American Sign Language and vice versa, facilitating communication between the student, peers, and staff
- Support the student’s engagement, comprehension, and social participation during lessons and school activities
- Maintain records of interpreting activities and actively participate in educational planning when appropriate
