Elementary 1:1 Sign Language Interpreter (ASL) | Sylva, North Carolina

An immediate need has opened for a qualified Sign Language Interpreter seeking a fulfilling contract opportunity in an elementary school setting. This onsite position centers around providing dedicated 1:1 support for a Kindergartner who is completely deaf and embarking on their journey to learn sign language. Key Qualifications:

• Certified Sign Language Interpreter with current licensure
• Experience in elementary school environments preferred
• Skilled in working 1:1 with students, particularly those just beginning to communicate with sign language
• Creative in incorporating visual supports to foster comprehension and engagement
• Strong communication skills, patience, and adaptability

Role Responsibilities:

• Deliver full-time, onsite interpretation for a Kindergartner with profound hearing loss, from approximately 7:30 AM to 2:30 PM Monday through Friday
• Facilitate communication and access to the educational environment, supporting both academic and social-emotional growth
• Work closely with teachers and support staff to ensure classroom activities are visually accessible
• Adapt instruction and support to the student’s current abilities and evolving language skills
• Foster an inclusive, encouraging environment as the student develops foundational signing abilities
