Qualifications & Experience Desired:

  • Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL)
  • Prior experience working as a Sign Language Interpreter or as an ASL teacher, preferably in a school environment
  • Ability to facilitate communication between deaf/hard-of-hearing students and hearing peers and staff
  • Knowledge of interpreter ethics and confidentiality practices in educational settings
  • Current license or certification as required by state or local guidelines
  • Strong interpersonal skills and a collaborative spirit
  • Flexibility to adapt communication styles for different ages and learning needs

Responsibilities Include:

  • Providing real-time sign language interpretation during classroom instruction, assemblies, parent meetings, and school events
  • Assisting in lesson delivery for students learning American Sign Language, supporting their linguistic and cultural growth
  • Collaborating with teachers, special education staff, and administration to ensure academic and social inclusion
  • Helping to modify classroom materials and communication strategies as needed for accessibility
  • Offering support and education about Deaf culture and effective communication techniques to staff and students
  • Maintaining accurate records of services provided, in accordance with confidentiality practices
