Sign Language Interpreter (ASL) | Valparaiso, Indiana

Make a meaningful impact by providing one-on-one interpreting support for a Deaf or Hard of Hearing (DHH) student at the Head Start Center in Crown Point, Indiana. This rewarding contract opportunity offers consistent hours (Monday through Friday, 8:00 am – 2:00 pm, totaling 30 hours weekly) in a supportive educational setting. You’ll play a vital role in ensuring access to learning and communication for your student each day.

Key Qualifications:

• Hold a valid Educational Interpreter Permit
• Proof of high school diploma or equivalent
• Completion of Human Trafficking Training and Child Abuse and Neglect Training, per educational requirements
• Meet at least one of the following:
  • Successful completion of the EIPA written test and a minimum score of 3.5 on the EIPA skill test
  • RID certification
• Demonstrated proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL) and understanding of DHH student needs
• Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to collaborate with educational staff

Responsibilities:

• Provide direct sign language interpretation for a single DHH student during classroom activities and daily routines
• Ensure communication accessibility between the student, peers, and teachers
• Interpret in various settings as required within the Head Start Center
• Support the educational and social growth of the student through accurate, culturally responsive interpreting
• Maintain professionalism, confidentiality, and strict adherence to school policies and ethical standards
