Make a positive impact by supporting a young learner as a Sign Language Interpreter for a Deaf or Hard of Hearing (DHH) student. This contract opportunity offers the chance to facilitate meaningful communication and enrich the educational experience for one student at a vibrant Head Start center. You'll play a crucial role in fostering inclusivity and success in the classroom environment.
Desired Experience and Qualifications:
- Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL)
- Experience interpreting in educational settings, preferably with DHH students
- Knowledge of Deaf culture and best practices for working with DHH children
- Ability to interpret classroom instruction and conversations in real time
- Certification or licensure for educational interpreting (preferred)
- Strong interpersonal skills and professionalism
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide on-site interpretation services for a DHH student at a Head Start center
- Facilitate clear communication between the student, educators, and peers
- Attend to the student's needs during the school day, from 8:00 am to 2:00 pm
- Support classroom participation, understanding of lessons, and social interaction
- Adapt communication methods as necessary for the age and needs of the student
- Collaborate with classroom staff to ensure a positive and inclusive environment
