This unique contract opportunity is ideal for an ASL-fluent professional who is passionate about fostering communication, access, and confidence for young learners.
In this role, you’ll go beyond interpreting; you’ll provide compassionate, individualized support—from language facilitation to academic assistance, social-emotional encouragement, and personalized behavioral guidance. You’ll help a bright elementary-aged student with mild cognitive delays navigate classroom routines, build communication skills, participate alongside peers, and experience success at school.
What You’ll Bring:
- Fluency in American Sign Language (ASL) is required
- Previous school, special education, or 1:1 support experience preferred
- Background supporting children who are deaf/hard of hearing is a plus
- Ability to communicate and support learning in ASL throughout the school day
- Patient, encouraging, and child-centered approach
- Strong collaboration and interpersonal skills
- EIPA or RID certification not required, but given preference
Your Day-to-Day Responsibilities:
- Provide consistent 1:1 support using ASL for classroom instruction, peer interactions, and routines
- Rephrase, break down, and scaffold academic content to aid understanding
- Offer hands-on educational and behavioral assistance
- Support use of AAC, communication boards, and visual aids as needed
- Encourage classroom participation and social connections
- Assist with transitions, engagement, and emotional regulation
- Collaborate closely with teachers, DHH specialists, speech/AAC providers, and IEP team members
- Create a supportive, inclusive environment where the student feels seen, heard, and valued
