Embark on a rewarding contract opportunity as a Special Education Teacher supporting middle and high school students in a self-contained, specialized environment near Albany, NY. You’ll work with a group of just 78 students distributed across 10 classrooms, each designed for students with level 3 autism, severe cognitive disabilities, and significant behavioral and communication needs. This position runs from July 2026 through June 2027, providing continuity and impactful teaching over a full academic year.
Your typical workday will follow a 7:45 am to 3:15 pm schedule, Monday through Friday. While formal planning periods are not included during the day, teachers can be approved for up to 40 hours per week—including additional time spent before or after school for essential duties like IEP completion, planning, or paperwork.
Key Qualifications:
- Valid New York State Special Education (Students with Disabilities) teaching certification or in-progress state licensure. Recent graduates and candidates with pending or out-of-state licensure are encouraged to apply.
- Strongly preferred: Direct experience with students with level 3 autism, severe behavioral challenges, or those using alternative communication/medical supports.
- Background in administering alternative assessments and adapting general curricula for individual student needs.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Deliver specialized instruction within an 8:1:3 classroom ratio.
- Employ differentiated teaching strategies for non-verbal students with complex cognitive and behavioral profiles.
- Develop and implement IEPs and alternative assessments, ensuring legal compliance and robust documentation.
- Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team to support personalized learning and behavioral plans.
