This contract position focuses on supporting students in a specialized setting, serving individuals with diverse needs including level 3 autism, severe cognitive disabilities, and behavior challenges. The school serves 78 students in 10 self-contained classrooms, with an 8:1:3 staffing ratio to ensure each student receives personalized attention. Students often use alternative ways to communicate and many are non-verbal.

Available assignments include working with middle schoolers in an academically-focused environment or with older students on pre-vocational skills—even supporting adult learners. The school values both practical teaching abilities and a deep commitment to student advocacy and growth.

Qualifications:

  • New York licensure in Special Education (Students with Disabilities), or eligibility for NY certification (recent master’s graduates or candidates transferring an out-of-state license will be considered)
  • Bachelor’s degree is accepted, but a Master’s degree is preferred
  • Strongly prefer experience working with students with level 3 autism, significant behavior challenges, or those using alternative communication and with complex medical needs
  • Background in alternative assessments and curriculum modifications is ideal

Key Responsibilities:

  • Teach and support students in a self-contained, structured setting—focusing on academics, life skills, and pre-vocational training depending on assignment
  • Complete critical paperwork, including IEPs and documentation; time before and after school approved to support this essential work
  • Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team to create a safe and nurturing learning environment
  • Employ evidence-based strategies to engage students with various learning needs and communication styles

Schedule:
Work hours are 7:45 am–3:15 pm, Monday through Friday, up to 40 hours per week. The position is available immediately and runs through the end of the current school year.
