Step into a rewarding contract opportunity supporting elementary students as a Special Education Teacher for the coming school year. This position covers a maternity leave from August 21st through early January, coinciding with the academic start on August 26th. The role provides meaningful engagement with a diverse group of K-4 learners, in a supportive educational environment close to Burlington, VT.
You’ll work with a well-balanced caseload of approximately 10-15 students (average of 12) possessing a range of learning needs, including learning disabilities, other health impairments, and those on the Autism spectrum. This setting values innovative, structured teaching, and experience with Orton Gillingham or Wilson reading approaches will be highly regarded.
What You Need:
- Valid certification as a Special Education Teacher
- Previous experience in elementary special education strongly preferred
- Comfort and skill in teaching students with a variety of disabilities
- Familiarity with structured literacy interventions (Orton Gillingham or Wilson) is an asset
- Excellent communication, organization, and collaboration abilities
- Ability to foster inclusion, flexibility, and positivity in your instructional approach
What You’ll Do:
- Provide individualized and small-group instruction to students K-4
- Develop and implement IEPs according to best practices and student needs
- Collaborate with general education teachers, support staff, and families to maximize student progress
- Monitor and document student growth, providing regular updates
- Utilize a 40-minute daily prep/planning period to design engaging lessons and interventions
- Support classroom community and champion students’ unique strengths and abilities
The schedule runs from 7:30 am to 3:30 pm, totaling 37.5 hours per week, ensuring you have both a consistent routine and dedicated planning time.
