Job Type Contract

A Washington State program is seeking a School Psychologist to support students within a maximum-security juvenile detention facility. This role offers a rare opportunity to work with a highly vulnerable population in a structured, well-supported environment that prioritizes safety, professionalism, and student well-being.

The psychologist will step into a role previously held long-term by a provider who transitioned into a permanent position, reflecting the sustainability and support of this setting.

Clinical & Counseling Focus

Although assessment responsibilities remain part of the position, this role is primarily counseling-driven. Students in this program have experienced extensive trauma, instability, and disrupted support systems. Many are justice-involved youth who require a psychologist with a calm, grounded, and relational approach.

The district is seeking someone who:

  • Practices trauma-responsive care

  • Builds rapport through consistency and empathy

  • Maintains a non-threatening, respectful presence

  • Supports emotional growth without confrontation or power-based dynamics

Core Responsibilities

  • Conduct required psychoeducational assessments onsite

  • Provide individual and group counseling services

  • Complete evaluation reports remotely

  • Support IEP development and attend meetings as needed

  • Collaborate with instructional staff, mental health teams, and facility personnel

  • Contribute to a supportive, student-centered therapeutic environment

Qualifications

  • Washington State School Psychologist certification or eligibility

  • Counseling experience strongly preferred

  • Trauma-informed training or experience highly desired

  • Ability to work effectively in a secure, structured setting

  • Experience with alternative education, juvenile justice, or high-needs populations is a plus

Work Environment & Support

  • Secure facility with trained security staff onsite

  • No gender preference for candidates

  • Prior psychologists have worked successfully in this setting for multiple years

  • Strong emphasis on student safety, dignity, and emotional support

This role is ideal for a school psychologist who values connection over control and is motivated to make a meaningful difference in the lives of students who need stability, compassion, and consistent support.
