Special Education Teacher in Dowagiac, MI

Make a real impact supporting middle and high school students with cognitive impairments as a Special Education Teacher in a welcoming school environment. This contract position serves a caseload of approximately 10 students per classroom, each with severe cognitive impairments, and you’ll be supported at all times by 2-3 dedicated paraprofessionals. The school is located near Dowagiac, MI, offering an excellent opportunity for educators in the surrounding areas, including Niles and Edwardsburg.

Preferred candidates hold a Michigan Special Education certification with a CI (Cognitive Impairment) endorsement, but those with other special education credentials—including Indiana certification and willingness to apply for Michigan reciprocity—are welcome to apply. This supportive hiring team values experience and flexibility as much as formal education.

Qualifications:

• Valid Michigan Special Education Teacher certification with CI endorsement preferred
• Other special education certifications considered (including Indiana certification), with willingness to obtain Michigan credentials
• Experience in a middle or high school SPED environment is highly valued
• Ability to collaborate with paraprofessional staff
• Commitment to fostering a nurturing and inclusive learning atmosphere

Responsibilities:

• Manage a caseload of middle and high school students with severe cognitive impairments
• Develop and implement individualized education plans (IEPs)
• Collaborate with paraprofessionals to meet daily classroom goals
• Adapt curriculum and lessons according to each student’s unique needs
• Participate in IEP meetings and communicate progress with families and staff
