Step into a meaningful role supporting middle school students as a Special Education Teacher for grades 6–8 (SPED) in a long-term substitute position. This contract opportunity begins at the end of August and is estimated to extend between 8 to 12 weeks, possibly longer, aligning with a staff leave. In this assignment, you will work full-time, Monday through Friday, for 40 hours per week.
You’ll lead a self-contained classroom of no more than eight students within the Stride program, supporting those with a range of autism spectrum needs and potential learning disabilities. The small class size ensures you can provide focused, individualized instruction tailored to both low and high functioning students.
Requirements and Qualifications:
- Valid Maryland Special Education Certification for grades 6–12 (conditional certificates accepted)
- At least 2 years of prior Special Education teaching experience (middle school level strongly preferred)
- Deep familiarity with instructional strategies tailored for students with autism and learning disabilities
- Dedication to fostering a supportive, structured classroom environment
- Collaborative spirit to work with fellow educators, support staff, and families
- Strong communication skills, patience, and adaptability
Responsibilities:
- Develop and implement individualized lesson plans and IEPs for each student
- Adapt curriculum to diverse learning styles and abilities in a self-contained setting
- Monitor student progress and maintain accurate records
- Foster a positive, engaging, and inclusive classroom environment
- Partner with families, related services, and school staff to ensure student success
