This rewarding contract role runs from ASAP through the end of the school year, with opportunities available in both secondary (high school/adult, pre-vocational focus) and intermediate (middle school, academic focus) classrooms. The school serves a close-knit community of 78 students across 10 self-contained classrooms in an 8:1:3 environment, supporting learners with level 3 autism, severe cognitive and behavioral challenges, and primarily non-verbal communication styles.
Hours are Monday through Friday, 7:45 AM to 3:15 PM. While there are no formal planning periods, approved time up to 40 hours per week is available for teachers who come in early or stay late to manage paperwork, individualized education plans (IEPs), and classroom planning.
Qualifications:
- Current New York State Special Education (Students with Disabilities) license or eligibility. Recent graduates with relevant degrees or candidates with out-of-state licensure are encouraged to apply—the school is supportive of those in the process of obtaining NY licensure.
- Bachelor’s degree required; master’s degree strongly preferred.
- Previous experience with level 3 autism, severe behaviors, or students who use alternative communication methods is highly valued.
- Familiarity with modifying curriculum, alternative assessments, and supporting students with significant medical or communication needs preferred.
Key Responsibilities:
- Support student growth in self-contained classrooms, adapting lessons and materials for highly individualized learning needs.
- Develop and implement meaningful IEPs and track student progress.
- Foster a safe, structured, and nurturing classroom environment.
- Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team, including therapists, aides, and support staff.
- Emphasize communication and independence for students utilizing alternative and augmentative communication methods.
