Teacher of the Visually Impaired in Gretna, LA

Step into a meaningful role supporting students with visual impairments across multiple sites in the New Orleans area for the upcoming academic year. This contract opportunity offers a dynamic, itinerant schedule, allowing you to collaborate with diverse teams and truly impact the educational experience for learners with special needs.

As a resourceful and dedicated professional, you’ll facilitate essential services, ensuring that visually impaired students have equitable access to education. You will travel to different campuses daily, working closely with general education teachers, school staff, and the Louisiana Department of Education, as well as providing direct student support and specialized instruction.

Key Responsibilities:

• Interpret and address the needs of visually impaired students across assigned sites
• Obtain and prepare textbooks and materials in accessible formats, including Braille
• Deliver in-service training to school personnel for inclusive classroom environments
• Maintain ongoing communication with classroom teachers and the Department of Education
• Utilize and train others in assistive technology for the visually impaired
• Provide Braille instruction and support orientation and mobility training (preferred)
• Perform related duties as assigned by the Director of IDEA

Desired Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree with active Louisiana DOE certification in Visual Impairment required
• At least 3 years’ experience in education settings, ideally with special or elementary/secondary education
• Expertise with assistive technology and Braille instruction
• Excellent communication, analytical, and organizational abilities
• Demonstrated independence, professionalism, and adaptability in fast-paced environments
• Ability to manage multiple priorities and travel independently to various locations
• Completion of required drug screening and fingerprinting
