Registered Nurse Duties
As part of a dynamic and critical thinking team, a registered nurse is responsible for leading others as well as helping to make quick decisions that serve a patient’s best needs. Aside from the general nursing duties that are required, such as monitoring patients for vital signs, administering medications, maintaining patient records and monitoring the patient’s diet, a registered nurse must also know how to modify patient treatment plans, develop improvement programs and work with the doctors to perform necessary examinations or treatments for the better health of the patient. Registered nurses can create and modify patient records, access care plans, and order medicine from the pharmacy. A nurse must know how to think critically and make sound decisions.
RN Education Requirements
In order to become a registered nurse, you must complete a nursing program that grants you an associate’s or bachelor’s degree in nursing. Most nursing school students decide to pursue a bachelor’s degree in registered nursing, as this can benefit job placements in the future. Aside from obtaining a diploma in registered nursing, the prospective nurse must also obtain a state license, and pass the NCLEX-RN certification exam in order to be considered at any hospital or clinic. It is also a wise idea to pursue additional education, as a registered nurse with a master’s degree makes an even larger salary and is in higher demand than regular nurses. Registered nurses have the ability to oversee other nurses, making it an opportunity for career advancement and an increased living wage.
