Per Diem Pharmacist Duties
A per diem pharmacist assumes many of the same roles as a permanent pharmacist, but must keep in mind their on-call status. When needed for an important pharmacy fill-in, the per diem pharmacist will be responsible for fulfilling and dispensing medications, assessing prescriptions, ensuring that the proper prescriptions are given to satisfy the patient’s needs, working directly with patients to educate them about administration and use of their medications, working with pharmacy technicians to ensure proper dosages are mixed, and communicating with staff and patients to help the day-to-day functions of the pharmacy run smoothly. A per diem pharmacist might also be asked to work with other departments and medical centers to ensure that prescriptions and special orders are fulfilled properly. Despite their per diem status, they will still be required to report to the pharmacy director as needed, as well as working on other pharmacy projects in the area.
Per Diem Pharmacist Education Requirements
A per diem pharmacist is required to have graduated from an accredited school of pharmacy, earning all related degrees and certificates. They must also have a combination of proper training, hands-on experience and working knowledge. A per diem pharmacist must have a valid certificate of registration as a licensed pharmacist issued by their state of hire, as well as national licensure by the pharmacy board. Aside from the required documents, a per diem pharmacist must also be able to communicate effectively, understand how to process medical information, establish working relationships with patients and coworkers and perform proper research before starting a project.
Per Diem Pharmacist Job Market
Per diem pharmacists are paid by the hour, as they may not work a full-time schedule. A breakdown by the Bureau of Labor Statistics shows that the average hourly salary depends on experience and geographic location. There is good projected growth in demand for per diem pharmacists, making it a great time to enter the job field.
