The job of the school sign language interpreter is to help deaf students communicate effectively and continue to learn successfully in an education setting. These professionals must have strong memory, listening, research, and sign language abilities in order to effectively nurture and teach students in a positive environment. School sign language interpreters are required to learn and understand a variety of different environments, which include schools, government agencies and even hospitals. This special type of teacher will assist hearing-impaired students inside and outside of the classroom, generating specialized curriculum plans and working with their parents to ensure their educational and health needs are met.

School Sign Language Education Requirements

A school sign language professional is required to have a bachelor’s degree, although some associate programs are also compatible for eligibility. They must also acquire a voluntary certification in a professional school sign language field, which helps them advance their careers and increase their chances of becoming hired. On top of the necessary education, it is vital that school sign language interpreters become certified in the understanding and implementation of American Sign Language (ASL). A good school sign language interpreter must possess patience, compassion, quick thinking skills and a good attention to detail.
