Visually Impaired Teacher Duties

Visually impaired teachers, also known as VI or TVI professionals, are important specialists that can perform a variety of critical roles and responsibilities in a school environment. In general, a VI teacher is expected to give specialized instruction and services to their visually impaired students, meeting their unique needs and providing compassion and patience to support their success. A VI teacher should also be aware of local community programs and support services available to help visually impaired students, as well as know how to acquire information about state and national resources to better educate the visually impaired. VI teachers should have an open line of communication with classroom teachers and other education personnel, giving their visually impaired students the best chance of a smooth and successful education. The visually impaired teacher should make sure that braille or large-type texts are available to the students who need them. They are also responsible for creating their own education curriculum that identifies the student’s area of need and teaches them in a way they can understand.

Visually Impaired Teacher Education Requirements

A VI teacher must have the necessary teaching credentials, as well as a specialized supplemental certification that qualifies them to work with visually impaired students. They are required to gain state-level certification in order to successfully educate those in a K-12 grade level. A prospective VI teacher must also pass a comprehensive test, which ensures that the individual possesses the necessary skills and abilities to successfully teach this special group of students. Depending on the state and location of the hiring facility, VI teachers may be required to have multiple certifications.

Visually Impaired Teacher Job Market

The salary for a certified visually impaired teacher can change greatly depending on the teacher’s certifications and experience, as well as the state and hiring facility. Most VI teachers benefit from health insurance, dental coverage and other workplace benefits. The job outlook for this position is projected to have a steady growth.
