MRI Technologist Duties
An MRI technologist uses magnetic resonance imaging machines to create accurate scans and diagnoses of patients in need of a closer assessment. As an MRI technologist, you will play a key role in determining the best health and treatment plans of the patient. MRI machines are still fairly new devices, with only 40 years of technology to help professionals in your position determine how to best treat a patient. MRI machines provide more accurate images than x-rays, making your duty as an MRI technologist essential to proper diagnosis of a patient. You will be responsible for ensuring that patients are comfortable during the scanning process, as well as speaking with them about the tests they are going through. You will have to have a compassionate heart, as you will establish a relationship with the patient and provide emotional and education support to them and their families. You will be required to provide the best diagnostic images possible by utilizing the technology correctly and working closely with other medical professionals such as anesthesiologists to help the patient feel relaxed.
MRI Technologist Education Requirements
MRI technologists are required to have an associate’s degree in a related medical field, but no further education is required. However, to gain an edge in the job market, you may pursue additional education in the form of a bachelor’s or master’s degree. This can place you in a higher than entry-level position, increasing your job title and your wages. Aside from the required associate’s degree, the MRI technologist must have state licensure and national certification for best chances at job placement.
MRI Technologist Job Market
The Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts a steady growth of 10% in job demand between now and 2024, making it more essential to acquire the proper training. With an increased number of older generations seeking hospital care, it is important to stay on top of this advanced scanning technology.
