Speech-Language Pathology Assistant Duties

A speech-language pathology assistant carries almost all of the same duties as a fully-certified speech-language pathologist, but with a few less requirements. The speech-language pathology assistant, also known as the speech therapy assistant or hearing therapy assistant, will create and implement tasks to help individuals develop language, oral and communication skills. This individual will be responsible for implementing screening protocols as directed by the speech-language pathologist, will document patient progress, monitor patients through different electronic systems, and assess the needs of patients on a case-by-case basis. The daily life of the speech-language pathology assistant will include keeping records, making charts, preparing graphs, presenting reports and observing behavioral and communication patterns in all patients.

Speech-Language Pathology Assistant Education Requirements

A speech-language pathologist is required to have at least a Bachelor’s degree in speech-language pathology or some form of therapy, as well as whatever credentials are required by their state or location. The requirements for a speech-language pathologist may vary from state to state, although a degree is always a priority. Overall, the individual must possess compassion, patience, great critical thinking skills, great writing skills and a professional demeanor. Speech-language pathology assistants will be responsible for aiding the pathologist with any and all tasks, and so a speech-language pathology assistant will need to know how to be quick-thinking and be able to multi-task under a variety of different situations.

Speech-Language Pathology Assistant Job Market

The job outlook for speech-language pathology assistants is strong and getting stronger. As the general population ages, more patients will require speech therapy. At the same time, there’s greater awareness of speech and language disorders among children. Obtaining a Master’s degree can help the individual earn an even higher salary, although more training may be required. Overall, the job market is growing in the industry, making it a great time to get started as a speech-language pathology assistant.
