Behavioral Specialist (BCBA, ABA & RBT) Duties
A behavioral specialist is responsible for providing services to individuals with developmental disabilities. These services can include Behavior Intervention Plans (BIP), Functional Behavior Assessments (FBA), and positive reinforcement strategies. The goal of a behavioral specialist is to help their students lead more independent and fulfilling lives.
Behavior specialists who typically work in an educational setting collaborate with teachers, school administrators, and other professionals to address the needs of students. Behavior specialists use a variety of techniques to teach new skills and promote positive behavior change. Behavior specialists also conduct Functional Behavior Assessments to identify the purpose or function of problem behaviors.
Behavioral Specialist (BCBA, ABA & RBT) Education Requirements
Behavioral Specialists need at least a master’s degree in Psychology, Sociology, Education, or another related field. Many Behavior Specialists also have a Ph.D. or PsyD. In addition to their academic requirements, Behavior Specialists must also complete a clinical internship and pass a state-licensed exam. Some Behavior Specialists may need to complete continuing education credits to maintain their license.
