Radiation and Oncology Duties
A radiation and oncology technician plays a crucial role in the hospital, using the study of cancer and tumors to best assist patients in dire need of medical care. As part of a daily routine, radiation and oncology technicians are required to administer radiation therapy treatments to patients who have all forms of cancer. This individual will play an intimate role in establishing a one-on-one relationship with the cancer patient; therefore, a compassionate heart and a patient mind are absolute requirements. Radiation and oncology technicians must position the patient comfortably in the rooms where they are to receive radiation treatment. They are also certified to adjust the radiation machines in order to ensure proper dosage and direct administration. The radiation and oncology technician is also responsible for writing and keeping detailed records of the patient’s cancer treatments as well as their health history. This professional must expect to provide emotional support to patients who are undergoing intensive treatments.
Radiation and Oncology Education Requirements
A radiation and oncology technician is required to have an associate’s or bachelor’s degree in radiology or a directly related field. Then, they must participate in and complete a year-long certificate program in radiation therapy. Most states in the U.S. require radiation and oncology professionals to be licensed, and other states require the technician to pass the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists certification exam. The radiation and oncology professional must adhere to standards of ethics, have an understanding of medical procedures and have a compassionate heart to best help patients in their time of need.
